Pain and the older athlete

The pain never goes away. Pain tradeoffs can be made though. There is the pain of a workout rather than the pain of not working out. We all have friends and family who don’t workout and they experience that pain from not working out.

Here is some help for those with pain.

Back pain cure: If it’s really muscle pain it works wonders to use weight lifting and pull the weight back to the area that is sore or hurting. If it’s your upper back pull back there. If it’s your lower back, pull back some weight there. Weight machines that allow you to work your back muscles help. Rowing machines also help as I like to pull back towards each vertebrae that is sore to send blood and energy to that area. Even pulling back the steering wheel while stopped helps the upper back. Pull back to help the back. We do far too much forward at the computer, while driving and etc. Seldom do we balance that with some pulling back.

PS stay hydrated and care for your kidneys as that can come off as lower back pain too. When in doubt ask a doctor.

Shoulder pain or elbow pain: rehab with light weights (5 lbs or less) to work those little muscles with care. Again go in the opposite direction that you normally go for the sake of regaining some muscle balance.

Pain could also be a disc problem with referral pain shooting out into another area. Your back, leg, arm could be hurting when really it’s your disc. Avoid disc injuries by strengthening your core by being active.

Stay clean. Personal hygiene goes along way. After some athlete’s foot issues at a gym, I now blow dry my feet before putting on shoes. Brush teeth. Clean hands often. If you are wondering about it, act on it.

Hamstrings sore, go backwards. We do so much forward, like walk or run forwards, we need to go the other direction for some feedback too.

When I have a headache, it’s usually self-inflicted. Make better choices.

Much pain can be worked out. We go to medical professionals to find out what we can DO for pain. There is lot we can do in terms of exercise to have the controlled pain of a workout rather than the pains associated with not working out.
